Nursing Home Division Contract Negotiations Update

In Tough Times, Tough Victories

Of the nursing home agreements that expired between March and December of 2009, 1199ers have now settled 32 contracts on the same general pattern. While the details vary, the general pattern includes:

  • A 2.5% wage increase this year (2010)
  • Expiration date in 2011 – the vast majority on the same date (3/15)
  • No permanent givebacks – temporary concessions (such as giving up a Holiday) end, and the full benefits come back, before the contract ends.
  • The deep economic recession made significant progress difficult to achieve this past year, with nursing home bosses taking advantage of current conditions to try to destroy our contracts. Nursing home members fought back to preserve what we have and position ourselves to make bigger progress in the next contract.

More work to doBut before we make that progress, we have more work to do. There are 13 contracts still being negotiated where we have not yet been able to get employers to agree to the pattern.

There’s nothing special about the 32 homes that agreed to the pattern – the bosses aren’t any nicer and their finances aren’t any stronger than at the other 13. Just like the homes where we did get contracts, it will take determination, unity, member participation in contract negotiations and, when necessary, a possible strike to settle our contracts on pattern. Every 1199 member, no matter where we work, deserves no less.
