District 1199 Haiti Relief Effort
We have all been moved and stunned by the disaster that continues to develop in Haiti. Our union is especially and very personally affected as some 500 members of 1199 come from and/or have family in Haiti.
Immediate ResponseThe immediate medical needs are so great that we must respond quickly. As an organization, District 1199 will therefore make an initial donation of
$10,000 to Partners in Health (Zanmi Lasante in Kreyol).
Since 1985, Partners in Health has been supporting health care in Haiti, developing hospitals, clinics, blood banks and other facilities and training people in the local communities to become health care providers. Partners in Health was featured on 60 Minutes as one of the most effective relief organizations operating in Haiti.
After discussions with our Executive Board, we may make further organizational donations to Partners in Health or other grass roots non-profit organizations that fit our mission as health care workers and believers in social justice
Volunteers Needed for District 1199/SEIU Help Haiti EffortIf any members of District 1199 are interested in volunteering – nurses, personal care assistants, doctors and others – to provide the direct support needed by the people of Haiti, please contact your delegate or organizer or email the union at mailbox@seiu1199ne.org. We will contact you as soon as we have specific information.
Future NeedsThe need for support for Haiti will continue for many years beyond the initial tragedy.
To provide continuing support, we are setting up the
1199 Haiti Relief Fund and will be asking all of our members to make whatever contribution you can. The Relief Fund will be used where it is most needed for purposes, including:
-
Sending 1199 volunteers to Haiti
-
Donations to other relief organizations
